I has a blog.

Maybe I’ll finish one of the…. 12? incomplete posts on here.

Maybe.

Although more traffic would come in if I just posted boobs.

    Well Az

    post moe!

  2. Azaroth Says:

Well, once you eliminate ads from your sites and don’t really have a deep, burning desire for attention.. posting becomes little more than a hobby, really. I don’t have REASON to post all of the time, so sometimes I go a month or two without even really worrying about it.

But I know you guys love me, so I’ll try to post a bit more.

I know something that will reduce your impetus to post - ~~Az’s Wacky Editz: FREESHARD 108C~~. With this, I have something to satisfy my MMO crack habit until Darkfall comes out (if ever).

Admittedly, I suppose a lot of the crowd around here have been there, done that when it comes to free shards.

  4. Azaroth Says:

I’ve been over this several times on this blog, but once again, please to not be linking free UO shards here.

Yes, I ran a UO shard. Problem is that everyone begins thinking that this makes my blog a fantastic place to spam their shard. My old boards used to be even worse.

I don’t want my blog to become spam heaven, especially not for free UO shards. Sorry. Thanks for the suggestion.

  5. Azaroth Says:

By the way, if you’re not pissed off at me yet, try this on for size:

    Darkfall is fucking vapourware.

  6. zzdroman Says:

Im not pissed off, its your blog after all. I am as dewey eyed with free shards as I am with Darkfall. No doubt you will pooh pooh the new Darkfall video which came out!

In any event, Im pretty sure I could play free shards for the next 20 years, as thats how long it will take to get a UO replacement if Darkfall shits itself.

  7. zzdroman Says:

In any event, an American who spells “vapourware” in the English manner is refreshingly peculiar.

  8. BlackRose Says:

lol Azaroth an American? You must not have been reading this blog for very long have you?

on a side note: hello Az long time no see

  9. Azaroth Says:

Well, and I’m not trying to be a dick here, but here’s the thing about videos. Basically, I can take any random, semi-functional engine and make enough content for a short clip of something that looks like a game.

What do you want? A couple mobs, a little environment art, a couple pew pew fireballs?

If that’s all it takes for people to believe I have an MMO, I should throw up a video and start selling tshirts.

The problem isn’t demonstrating that you’re able to create something on a small scale. The problem is having the money to create it on a large scale, and the skill to make sure it all works when it gets into the hands of the players. Oh yah, and these are MMOs. Have they demonstrated their server tech to anyone?

That’s kind of the hardest part..

Again, not trying to be a dick - but screenshots and short, shaky videos prove exactly jack shit. Especially after eight years.

  10. Azaroth Says:

    Oh, and hey BlackRose.

  11. zzdroman Says:

Cant disagree with you there. The absence of gameplay footage was conspicuous. However god knows how a bunch of chancers have kept the hype going for so long. It must be the most amazing money sink in the (akbeit short) history of MMOs.

After 7 years, disappointments have been so frequent that they have an easy job of meeting expectations - most people jump for joy every time Tasos even farts in the general direction of the forum. Accidently perfect management of expectations. They could probably put any runny shit of a game on the market and the fan boys would be in and defend it to death. I probably would too, if it wasnt for my discovery of free shards.

  12. Azaroth Says:

Edit: Hey, nevermind. I don’t want to come off like I’m badmouthing anyone here.

My opinion on whether Darkfall is going to release or not is known. It’s not necessary to say anything else.

  13. zzdroman Says:

What is sad is that it is the only light (mirage) on the horizon as far as new MMOs go. That being said, im getting more and more interested in independently run servers.

Things like WTFGTA has certainly piqued my interest - its amazing how people will compensate for a shitty market that doesnt fulfill their sought after niche.

  14. Azaroth Says:

I guess, but if you consider GTA something that can scratch your MMO itch, there are also.. well, infinite other options out there for you.

The only thing that might be missing are big, AAA PvP MMOs. But then again, there’s Age of Conan coming out. EvE online is a PvP game. There’s a BUNCH of smallerish MMOs like Fury and things like that. Really, an absolute fuckton of them.

So really, I don’t know what the hell people are talking about anymore. There’s plenty of smaller games and there’s also plenty of PvP MMOs that cost millions of dollars to make.

I think people are looking for someone to come along and go “Here. Here’s an MMO that’s exactly like UO. We spent $100 million on it, so it’s every bit as big and as smooth as anything on the market. We did this all for you, even though the market for people nostalgic for UO in specific is incredibly tiny.”

This is kind of what they’re doing with Darkfall. Except they’re promising everything under the sun and they have no experience, no ability to deliver, and no game.

Plus, even if they released Darkfall RIGHT NOW - would anyone play?

Aside from the incredibly naive design, the graphics are incredibly old. Because of that, the ONLY people who are going to be attracted are the hardcore fanboys and the hardcore PKers. No sheep will be attracted by that design and those graphics. At all.

From there, I can predict exactly how the lifespan of the game will play out, if you like.

Darkfall probably can’t release because they’re either faking this entire thing, or they don’t have a workable backend, or they don’t have the money to populate the world with even the slightest bit of content or.. whatever.

But if it WERE able to launch — it probably shouldn’t.

  15. Puscifer Says:

OK, hold the phone here! Has anybody read the article at the LoD Lord of Death website? They had one of their guildies take a trip to Athen to meet the developers and actually plate an older version of the game (as the new one wasn’t stable enough yet). I encourage everyone to go over there and read it cause from that article alone i think Darkfall really will realease and very soon at that. They even have open Clan Beta right now.

  16. Azaroth Says:

Well, I do remember some guy posting a thing with a bunch of stuff about how great combat was, etc.

He had supposedly traveled to Greece and they let him check it out.

Hey, that’s fantastic. If it’s true. I wonder if they let him sit in on some server stability tests.

It also seems like they showed him a few certain things. And again, a couple of working features does not a MMORPG make. Which is why this thing isn’t released, or anywhere close to it.

I hope they have a game, I really do. Maybe it’d be fun. But a phantom story about how a couple of working features are REALLY AWESOME doesn’t really prove anything to me.

Also, there is no clan beta. They have something about clan beta up on the site, but there is no beta. Especially not any kind of open beta.

  17. Puscifer Says:

I know your burnt out on running a free shard etc… But would you consider running a guild if a game like Darkfall came out? I’ve already followed you to this blog, why not follow you around in game? We could call ourselves the Azaroth Vapourwares!?

  18. Azaroth Says:

    Would I get paid?

No clue, honestly. I could never run a raiding guild. I just don’t have a significant portion of my life to give away for purpolez. Not to mention organizing everyone elses.

If the game were like UO and I basically just organized the pew pew? Yeah, maybe. If I enjoyed the game that much.

I don’t see it happening. If I were interested enough in reliving my UO days, I’d have been playing EvE by now. Or be interested in AoC. Or something.

  19. Relapse Says:

    More boobs, please.

  20. Violent Dave Says:

Whoops, totally just found this. Funny you mentioned my server, WTFGTA. I modeled a lot of the coding after a lot of UO social dynamics. I always saw EQ and UO as a fork in the road where businesses chose treadmills instead of sandboxes. Its ashame the an underground movement has to get started and revert back to that fork in the road just to get that satisfaction they want from MMO’s.
