Why Are You Happy?

by Azaroth | July 11th, 2009

There are several PvP games going strong or at least fairly strong at the moment, and I want to know why you’re enjoying them.

Example is Eve. If you play, why? What are the main points of why you’re enjoying yourself, what are you disliking, etc?

Darkfall?

UO shards?

Maybe you’re just still playing WoW. I’m even interested in why you’re playing there.

What’s the story? What drives your personal happiness within the game, and beyond that – what simply contributes to it? Meaning that maybe there are systems or aspects of the game that don’t benefit you personally or that you utilize personally, but their existence and their place within the world and the effects that has on the rest of the game is something that adds intangible benefits to your experience.

Not sure whether you are interested or not but there is a (interestingly similar to IPY) project going on over at uosecondage.com. T2a era accuracy is the name of the game (yes there is stat loss). I implore you to check it out. There is average 400 players on I’m guessing. Please disregard and even delete if you so desire. Just thought as one of your former players that you might be interested.

also the reason I enjoy UO so much is the fact that when I kill someone that I am able to loot anything off their corpse (barring a a newbie item or 2, if there are any) I also enjoy the actual aspect of fighting… the actual fighting system I mean.

Well, I might not be representative of most gamers my age, but I know that my preferences have changed a lot since IPY went down. I tried GuildWars, WoW, Age of Conan, and even the ever-anticipated Darkfall, but nothing has ever given me the same enjoyment that T2A-era UO does. What I like most about UO is that I’m not obligated to play x hours/week just to “keep up.” The pvp isn’t really much better that any of the other games; it’s basically a class-based game anyway. House looting was a lot of fun on IPY, but it’s gotten quite a bit harder as people have gotten more experienced over the years.

For me, a game should have the following features:
-Play at your own pace (no treadmill bullshit)

-PvP system in which you can pick up 90% of what you need to know very quickly, but continue to improve forever. I would say that WoW wasn’t too far from this. PvP could have been harder, but there was still a big divide between the average PvPer and the 2000 rated players.

-Objectives: All games need objectives, but that doesn’t mean that pvp needs to be item-based. It’s probably not a bad idea to have item-improved PvE though (similar to the silver weapons in UO). I like how player housing in UO gives you an objective that’s fun and challenging without putting other players at a disadvantage.

I don’t have much time to play games these days and I’m really resistant to the idea of learning to play a new game, so I’ve been playing uosecondage casually.
