- The results of the poll suggest a compromise may be ideal in the question of one ruleset versus two.
- 52% of voters prefer one evolution ruleset. These users are split exactly down the middle on the issue of trusting me to go as far as I want with that ruleset versus suggesting I play it conservative and add lightly on top of the existing IPY ruleset.
- 32% believe two rulesets to be the correct answer – though they are split between two servers (18%) and expansion pack solution (14%). Adding the expansion packers to the “Evolution” side would raise the voter majority to 70% for “Evolution – One Server”.
- 14% want one server with a classic IPY ruleset. Only 4% overall want absolutely no changes. This was surprising.
- 3% think I suck, will complain and make up wild tales about my devil worship no matter what I do (not to say it doesn’t necessarily happen – I just wouldn’t call it ‘wild’).
These numbers suggest to me that the proper course of action would be a compromise – a single hybrid ruleset, building upon the old and attempting to fill holes where need be, leaving superfluous changes out of the equation and leaving the flavour of oldschool Ultima Online intact.
This is a challenge in many ways. It’s also mildly disappointing that I end up scrapping so much of my design. However, one server concentrates the population, and I’m confident I can marry the two rulesets effectively without upsetting either in too serious a fashion. Concept, features, lore, screenshots, website (and yes, forum), will come at a later date.
One of the ideal parts about putting up two servers is that I could put the first up fairly quickly. This is no longer the case. Please be patient – I believe this will be the correct choice for the long term health of the game.
In addition, I’d be pleased not to trod upon the current territory of the existing shard operators. This is something I had wrestled with previously.
- I’m seeking More Programmers Please. The guys I have right now are great – but there’s always more work to get done. Even after I’m done paring down the design for the new 2.5 ruleset, there’s still going to be an incredible amount of coding.
- I’m going to run a super fast PvP Alpha coming up shortly. I wanted to do this quietly, but organizing people for any sort of testing phase is difficult. Please send an email to azaroth@gmail.com titled “IPY PvP Alpha 1″ and do not expect a reply. I’m going to pick a SMALL group of guys and we’ll do the test shortly. This is strictly a test of the OLD mechanics – to see what’s right and what’s wrong, what needs fixing and what we missed. Listing your PvP history and what you look for in Pre-UO:R shards as far as PvP will be helpful.
For the love of God, please do not get angry with me if there is no reply or you don’t get in to this tiny testing phase.
- Mapmakers. Come out come out wherever you are. I hate UO mapmaking tools and I’d rather not spend my time wrestling with them – if you’re REALLY good at making maps, let me know.
- There should probably be something about taming here, I guess. There will be changes and additions to Taming, but we’re not discussing those just yet. I just like the picture.

Also LOL at iced earth wanting a message above the players head when he’s getting synched on. The game already has this feature, it’s called your feet point at who you target. If you haven’t been attacked yet (on divinity at least did this for awhile) as soon as the explodes targetted you it told you on your screen “You are being attacked by Iced earth!”. In my opinion, this message made it TOO easy. You guys are trying to put in fixes that make it easier for you guys to heal dumps, but what about the rest of us who already heal the perfect explode ebolt synchs all day. How do you intend to kill us with feebler dumps and massive warnings?

Ultima Online not being kind to new players was always one of it’s biggest pitfalls.
I agree, but nerfing the end game pvp to help the “new guys” when theres so many much larger obstacles for a new player that would need to be addressed first. A noobie is gonna die if explodes stack or not to three players =/

On another note I’m totally going to be hosting the IPY nightly radio show come release.
The fact is any alternative worth trying would require an entire overhaul of the game. I can almost guarantee it would end up worse than what we began with. It’s hard to beat near-perfection. I think we should be leaving PvP mechanics true to original IPY since just about everyone agrees that it was a blast. Enough of the ‘make healing easier’ suggestions iced, it’s honestly sad.
One of IPY’s biggest problems was too many wolves and not enough sheep to sustain them. The focus should be on keeping the non-hardcore PvPers interested in the shard. The RPers, the PvMers, the crafters, etc. A custom BOD system, coloured ore (and wood as well), treasure hunting, MIBs, plant growing, possibly champ spawns, statloss, and so on are a few things that need much more consideration imo.
Also, Pisces meant to use Starcraft as his RTS example. C&C is for scrubs.
Agreed. Changing stuff with the PVP base mechanics will probably just be too hard to balance out. I’m recanting my previous opinions on the need to eliminate sync dumping in light of this realization, I really wish voicechat hadn’t changed UO but I guess we have to deal with that fact now. I just hope us oldschoolers don’t get left behind forever :)

When you step inside a certain dungeon which is setup just for our Synch Lovers. It’s basically a a huge open room with no obstacles, completely perfect for just standing there and pressing keys. You and your guild are transported to a certain part of the dungeon where you wait for the wall to drop.
Meanwhile, outside of this special Synchers Paradise, everyone else enjoys combat with non stacking explosions.
How does that sound? How can you possibly say no to this, Synch People?
I am still waiting for confirmation that more than 1 explosion could go off at once on someone on official UO.

I will say that on OSI you couldn’t stack your own explosions, but explosions from different people can stack. I found this out when I discovered I could stack my own explosions on Div and was like “WTF – when did this happen?”

What makes UO field pvp great is rolling around with your guild to places like Vesper bank, Wrong, Bucs, or another hotspot and catching another guild off guard and run around dropping people. Your “sync” dungeon idea is just retarded and I really feel you need to stop coming up with ideas to make your dexer “godly”.
Would also like to add in, IPY 2 should definitely unguard Trinsic. Those were some of the most fun fights I’ve had in UO and the lack of a close healer made for a much better quality of fights (no guilds constantly re-rezing to jump back into the fight with greater numbers after dieing completely outnumbering their opponent).

Weird, I thought i told Iced earth we DO use ebolt and flamestrike synchs already, and proceeded to link him to ACTUAL REAL VIDEOS of us doing it, and this I guess he just skips over my posts so he can keep arguing though. I’ll never forget the time I got into [zrv]‘s vent with iced earth and his buddys on divinity and tried to pvp. They were so horribly unorganized, and literally couldn’t land a single synch dump with me. After like 10 minutes of me calling dumps for his guild in vent, he finally, for the first time, acknowledged we were not “scripting” even though he had literally, for the last 4 months, been posting non-stop about how we were cheating. All you guys can do is hit me with generalities like “your ideas suck” and “your ideas kill group pvp” but you can’t give me a reason why. Over and over I have explained why unstackable explosions would be a huge key to giving playability to other character classes in pvp and giving a little more margin of error so that battles will be more Epic and Less Robotic.
“Skill” will become based on which guild has staying power, which people are playing their roles, who can adjust their tactics or come up with interesting new tactics in the battle instead of just who can heal and dump.
This is all made possible by explosion not being stackable because every other spell can be seen coming and be healed over. No more 120 damage Explosions + Ebolt + Bow means no more Instant Death pvp. I just don’t see how this is even a question, I would think that anyone who liked games like this would be more into battles that were more Epic and Dynamic.
Have you guys looked into Hybrid? There’s already a huge population there and Synching there is Cream of the Crop im sure.

Thing is explode-ebolt-bow != insta death. Its only true if a guild gets extremely lucky – Vent typically has a 100 ms delay not to mention the variable pings to the game server. Leaves you at WORST 200ms in which to land a heal which is completely possible if you practice it.
But your Trammel land of synch dump PvP sounds pretty good. B&B/Zyr/Ryl would kick some ass out there!

Yeah I tend to play from places where the internet just isn’t a major priority.
Vent has a slight delay that people who use it will get used to after a while, like we have. As sgorman said, some people use Skype now since it is a phone conversation and there’s no lag. Must guilds use vent though.

You don’t get special armor that boosts your hitpoints up into the 10,000s. You are, but a fraction of a second away from death at anytime in this game. When was it not like that?

People use vent for more than gaming – in fact I use my vent for remote collaboration on music production than gaming as of late. So I think that VOIP is a very important part of the internet now and its’ use has superceded the gaming culture and it’s now a big part of online communication in a lot of different ways. A lot of businesses use VOIP a shitton, too.
Chop – it has lag. Vent has lag. Not delay. Any delay you’re experiencing not related to connection and lag is due to internal sound card lag.
One thing I find very intriguing about VOIP that I can’t quite figure out is why MMO gamers overwhelmingly prefer Vent, yet FPS gamers largely prefer Teamspeak [which has always trailed Vent in quality and utility].
That’s wrong most FPS gamers use Vent. Also Skype is getting big for Ultima Online, since there is literally no delay for the caller. Synch’s are easy as fuck.

Mages also can get nuked in 2 seconds. Melee characters excel at 1v1, and can be successful in group pvp as is with a good support of mages. This is ultima online. If you add a little magery to your template, you wouldn’t be such a sitting duck. I took swords in my template, cause that’s what fucking works in THIS game that we are playing.
I don’t understand how melee based characters get nuked “faster” than a mage. If you have enough magery to cast a heal or reflect, you shouldn’t be dying if you know how to play. Plain and simple. We competed in synch pvp combat on a daily basis, and it was generally a surprised if one of us died.

Also, for the record when they went into the studio for siamese dream they had written about 40 songs, and put the best (in his opinion) 13 on SD, the rest of which were finished landed on PI.
